title: SpaceX Q3 2026: what one gigawatt of AI compute earns
date: 2026-10-20
summary: SpaceX nearly tripled revenue to $14.6B on AI cloud deals. Our estimate is that its $33B to $37B Q1 2027 guide needs each watt of compute to earn about $39 a year, about 2.6 times what Q3 produced.

## Key takeaways

- Revenue was $14.575B, up 161% from $5.576B a year ago and above the $12.72B LSEG consensus. The AI segment, called SI (Super Intelligence), brought in $7.560B, more than Starlink and rockets combined.
- On the call, SpaceX said compute pricing is "slightly above the high end" of a $30 to $50 per watt range and pays back in "less than a year." Q3 cloud revenue works out to about $15 per watt a year (our estimate).
- The Q1 2027 guide of $33B to $37B, against LSEG's $22.2B, implies about $36 to $42 per watt a year on year end capacity, about $39 at the midpoint (our estimate).
- One customer was 34.5% of Q3 revenue, about $5.0B. The 10-Q says cloud contracts are typically three years and either side can end them with 90 days' notice.
- At $144.75 on 22 Oct 2026, SpaceX is worth about $1.97T, about 14 times the annual pace of its Q1 guide (our estimate).

## The quarter in one table

In millions of dollars, from the release:

| Segment | Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 | Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| SI (AI compute, Grok, Cursor, X ads) | 7,560 | 2,561 | 813 |
| Connectivity (Starlink) | 5,248 | 4,291 | 3,097 |
| Space (launch) | 1,767 | 962 | 1,666 |
| Total revenue | 14,575 | 7,814 | 5,576 |

Net income was $4.404B, against a $1.054B loss a year earlier. Operating income was $2.791B. Add $873M of interest income and $1,025M of other income, subtract $675M of interest expense, and add a $390M tax benefit: that gives the $4.404B. For the nine months SpaceX still shows a $413M net loss.

CFO Bret Johnsen said SI solutions and infrastructure revenue was $7B ($7,022M in the release). Of that, $608M came from Cursor, the AI coding company SpaceX acquired on 14 August, which counts in revenue from that date. Excluding Cursor, he said, it grew 192% from Q2, "driven primarily by the activation of new cloud services agreements." In plain terms, SpaceX rents its AI data centers to other companies.

## The unit: one gigawatt of compute

A gigawatt (GW) is a billion watts. SpaceX measures its data centers by nameplate power, the electricity they are built to draw. It ended Q3 with 1.7 GW. Bret said it is on track for "nearly 2.2 gigawatts" at the end of October and 2.5 to 3 GW by year end.

| Step | Input | Result (our estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Build cost per GW | Jensen Huang, Nvidia, on OpenAI's cost | $50B to $60B |
| 2. Price per GW per year | just above $50 per watt, read as yearly | about $50B |
| 3. Payback at Huang's cost | step 1 / step 2 | about 1 to 1.2 years |
| 4. What Q3 earned | ($7,022M minus $608M Cursor) x 4 / 1.7 GW | about $15 per watt a year |
| 5. Same for Q2 | $2,194M x 4 / 1.4 GW | about $6 per watt a year |
| 6. What the Q1 guide needs | ($33B to $37B minus about $8.2B of Starlink, launch, ads and Cursor at Q3 levels) x 4 / 2.75 GW | about $36 to $42 per watt a year |

```bars Revenue per watt a year, our estimate
Q2 2026 | $6.3 | cloud revenue / 1.4 GW
Q3 2026 | $15.1 | cloud revenue ex Cursor / 1.7 GW
Q1 2027 guide, midpoint | $39 | needs this on 2.75 GW
Quoted price | $50 | just above the top of $30 to $50
```

The ratio that matters: Q3 earned about 30% of the quoted price per watt. The Q1 guide needs that to rise to nearly 80%.

There is a fair reason for the gap. Capacity came online during the quarter, so dividing by the 1.7 GW at quarter end understates what each live watt earned. Some compute also runs Grok, SpaceX's own AI. And for SpaceX to beat a one year payback at a $50 per watt yearly price, it has to build for less than Huang's $50B to $60B per GW, or charge more than $50.

## The base rate

Analysts did not expect this. LSEG's average Q1 2027 estimate was $22.2B and its full 2027 estimate was about $110B, per CNBC. The guide midpoint of $35B times four is $140B, above the whole year LSEG expected, from a single quarter's pace. Revenue per watt now has a short track record: about $6 in Q2, about $15 in Q3, about $39 implied for Q1 (our estimate). Each step more than doubles.

## Concentration meets debt

The 10-Q says "Customer B" was 34.5% of Q3 consolidated revenue and that its revenue "relates to the SI segment." That is about $5.0B, or about 72% of SI solutions and infrastructure revenue (our estimate). The filing says cloud fees are recognized over a contract term "typically three years and terminable by either party upon 90 days' notice."

At the same time SpaceX is borrowing. Bret guided Q4 capex to $35B to $40B. Semafor reported on 22 October, citing people familiar with the deal, that a $40B debt raise is expected to carry about 8.3% on the lowest rated piece and about 7.75% on a piece backed by chips, with pricing still able to change. At those rates, $40B costs about $3.1B to $3.3B of interest a year (our estimate). The debt is fixed. The biggest customer can leave on 90 days' notice. If high prices per watt hold, payback in about a year makes the debt easy to carry. If one large customer leaves, the interest stays.

## Other numbers worth knowing

- Starlink had 13.6M consumer subscribers, up from 12.0M in Q2. Average bill (ARPU) was $69 a month.
- Backlog, signed work not yet booked, was $62.96B. The 10-Q expects about 67% of it, roughly $42B, within a year.
- Cash and marketable securities were $89.855B against $38.844B of debt and finance leases.
- Operating cash flow was $13.097B for the nine months against $48.069B of segment capex.
- Launches fell to 35 from 44 a year ago.

## Guidance from the call

Spoken statements from an unofficial transcript, checked against the Motley Fool transcript. Not written guidance.

- Bret: "We now see total company revenues in the range of $33 billion to $37 billion for Q1 of 2027."
- Bret: SpaceX remains on track for "$100 billion in ARR by the end of this year," defined as December revenue times 12. That needs December revenue of about $8.33B, about 72% above Q3's monthly average (our estimate).
- Elon: "fairly confident of being able to bring an incremental 10 gigawatts of compute online in 2027," and "I would be surprised if we brought on less than 13 gigawatts of compute by the end of next year."
- Elon on Tesla: both companies "have formed special committees to discuss this idea at the request of shareholders." The committees "have not reached agreement on the terms of any transaction. And obviously, there's no guarantee that they will."

## What to watch

- December revenue against the $8.33B needed for $100B ARR.
- Whether Customer B's share falls as new cloud customers sign.
- Final pricing of the $40B debt deal.
- Gigawatts online at year end against 2.5 to 3 GW.

## What would make this wrong

SpaceX did not say whether the price per watt is yearly or a total over the contract. If it is not yearly, steps 2, 3 and 6 overstate what each watt earns.

Not financial advice.
